Career after mechanical engineering

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering. It is also referred to as the 'mother' branch of engineering. Traditionally, mechanical engineers have to deal with concepts such as mechanics, thermodynamics, robotics, kinematics, structural analysis, fluid mechanics and many others.

In broad terms, the job profile of mechanical engineers can be classified into the following functional segments:

  • Research and Development(R&D)
  • Design
  • Production
  • Analysis and Testing
  • Installation
  • Maintenanace

Competitive Exams

1.GATE -It is the most important entrance exam inorder to get jobs in public sector especially the top PSUs like NTPC,IOCL,ONGC,SAIL,COAL INDIA,NALCO,POWER GRID,etc. After the policy of recruitment on the basis of GATE score was undertaken this year, most of the PSUs will recruit through the GATE score. It is conducted by the seven IITs with IIT,Delhi the main head.It is held usually in the month of February.

2.Entrance exams of other PSUs-Many other PSUs like RITES,HAL,etc.and organizations like NPCIL,ISRO,BARC,etc. conduct their own written exam for recruitment in the concerned organization. For details of their exam like date, vacancies, etc. you have to be in touch with their official websites.

3.CDS exam & UES exam-These are the entrance exam inorder to get into Indian Army,Navy or Air Force after your graduation in the respective engineering disciplines. After clearing these exams, you will be given the rank of Lieutenant.

4.RRB,IRS,SCRA-These are the entrance exams inorder to get into Indian Railways. After qualifying in these exams you can opt for various posts.Every year, both state as well as central railway recruits many candidates.

5.IAS,IPS,IFS-Through these entrance exams ,you can get into the administrative sector(civil services). But it requires good preparation for its clearance.

6.TATA written test-This entrance test is conducted by TATA Power and Steel for recruitment of mechanical candidates every year.

7.Off-campus Interviews-Other private companies like L&T,Jindal Power and Steel, etc conduct off-campus interviews for recruitment of candidates.Sometimes, they also take written tests followed by interviews.
